It's actually $1028 now. But you forgot to mention your price is after a $260 rebate, so the real price is $909. So what does the extra $100 get you? Dell - 16X DVD+/-RW Drive Apple - 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

I have 2 IMacs at home and use a Macbook on the road. Since I use OS X 10.5, I also have a external HD for Time Machine and I made it bootable just in case. So far I haven't had any problems with running out of room for pictures and such but I use a digital camera and carry a bunch of spare SD cards also. A lot of folks here have mentioned Photoshop which is an excellent program. However for the average user it has too much bang for the buck with features that only a pro would need. Adobe makes a pared down version called "Photoshop Elements" that is much cheaper and so has done everything I need. Coupled with IPhoto it is the only program I use. Just make sure you have at least !GB RAM and 2GB is even better.

RE: Moving info from PC to iMac

I've been a PC guy ever since I tossed the Commodore. But my son got a new Mac for Christmas and I played around with it and I have to say, my next computer will be a Mac. The whole enchilada is built into the screen. Graphics are awsome. Just gotta have one. I jealous. If you haven't been there yet, check out the Apple store in Uptown. Very nice and helpful people.

RE: Moving info from PC to iMac

On the PC I was using ATT Yahoo browser. Where is the address book stored? If you mean the IMac address book, it's stored as separate cards here: user (usually your name)>library>application support>addressbook>metadata. You can also under the "file" menu in address book proper export as either an archive or v-cards.

RE: Mac Software Question!

I knew it was something like that. I still have a copy of Word 04 on my HD, but use IWork 99% of the time

RE: Mac Software Question!

Actually you can change the horse's color in both Office and IWork. As I said, I export a copy of my school files to my memory stick in Office format for use at school as a matter of course. Now if using Mac Office 08 you may need an XML converter to translate the new Windows Office format.

RE: Mac Software Question!

A program called Boot Camp comes with OS X and there is Parallels and Fusion that are also available. The difference is with Bot Camp you have to reboot to switch. With all three you have to have a copy of Windows. Having said that and depending on the school and her major, you may not need any of the above. I'm a teacher and use IWorks with total transparency. I use IWork to write a test, export it to Word, take it to school and edit it on the Windows computer on my desk. As for the price, I got the Family Pack of 5 installs for $80 (IIRC) which is half the price of the single student version of Office. Does it do enough? That's a question only your DD can answer. It depends on how many bells and whistles you need. Numbers is the weakest in a feature comparison with Excel, but Keynote and Pages have all the same basic features of PowerPoint and Word. I would suggest she use the trial version and see if it does everything she needs it to do. Next, when you shop, check out the Apple Store If you look in the frame "Apple Store" on the top left, you will see "Education Store". Apple offers discounts to student and faculty. For example, standard price for IWork single is $79, but $71 in the Ed store. Not much, I agree, but when sending a daughter off to college, every little bit helps. Many college bookstores also sell Mac items at the student discount price.

RE: Survey: Who's getting an iPhone 3G friday?

Over 1 million new 3G iPhones sold in the first 3 days. Not too shabby. Still going strong: "Jim Neal used Apple's iPhone availability widget to catalog the iPhone status and found that of Apple's 188 U.S. Retail stores, 117 were sold out of all three models, according to Fortune on Tuesday." "A company spokesperson for AT&T said that the iPhone 3G was sold out the first day with no prediction on when they'll be restocked." Story

And the screwup really hurt Apple. Yankee Group is estimating $433 million in sales in one weekend, the biggest CE launch ever. If only they hadn't screwed up they might have made some real money

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

Evidently some folks were in a hurry to get the new goodies: "Apple noted on Monday that the iPhone 3G, which went on sale on Friday, July 11th, has already sold more than one million units. What's more, the newly-launched App Store for iPhone and iPod touch has already hosted more than 10 million application downloads. The App Store went online on Thursday, July 10th." I can see why the servers were overwhelmed, it took 74 days to sell the 1M of the original IPhones.

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

That's why I got an IPod Touch to supplement our cell; couldn't justify the cost for benefit. We use it for quick entry when traveling - purchases, meals, etc. and info on campgrounds, routes, etc. It's ideal for a quick use in a MC'ds hotspot during lunch. Some of the apps look like they would be useful so we got 2.0. And of course we use it for music on the long empty runs, our dash radio has an MP3 jack

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

And that is why I'll stick with Nextel. That is certainly your prerogative, although I have seen this same type of problem with other vendors as some have mentioned. The lesson to be learned here (which others will have to learn the next timea new gadget arrives) is that, unless you absolutely have to have it, the release day is the worst time to buy.

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

No I'm not saying that. Here's the breakdown: IPhone 3G -New and comes with all necessary firmware to operate and some basic application software. After purchase you activate through the carrier (AT&T). This process overwhelmed the AT&T servers which crashed and put a strain the Apple servers that partnered the process. ITouch - not new, and at Rev 1.14 firmware. In order to run the new applications and access the APP Store, you need Rev 2.0 firmware which is downloaded through the Apple servers. The folks who just had to download 2.0 and play Monkeyball five minutes after release, put an additional strain on the servers that basically set up a DOS situation. Apple brought more servers online and had the problem resolved by 2000 last night. (At least that's when I downloaded it with no problem). As I said, I think that Apple should have split the two releases, but that is not my call. BTW, in my years of IT, firmware is "software" that is required for the basic operation of the equipment. Once you have that, then you can run the various application packages available which is known as software. So it's basically semantics. But whatever you wish to call it, the software was not the problem for the IPhone.

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

You are a bit confused. The software did come with it, the problem was in the activation process, not software. Which is where the AT&T glitch comes into play. Now those who had purchased the ITouch earlier and wanted access to the new App Store did need to upgrade their firmware. But it was not required for basic operation of the ITouch. And that was a problem with the Apple servers (or lack of sufficiency thereof) As I said earlier, the update probably could have been posted a day or two earlier to alleviate the load on the servers, but there was nothing that,ISTM, that couldn't have waited.

RE: Survey: Who's getting an iPhone 3G friday?

I've not heard of any software problems. The servers (some of which were not Apple's) couldn't handle the load. IMHO, they would have been better off releasing the firmware upgrade on a different day; between those getting a new IPhone and those who were just upgrading their ITouch, it was just too much at one time. Anyway, it appears it was readily solved as I upgraded my ITouch without any problems.

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

My ITouch just finished the upgrade process, took a little over an hour for my 8GB with 4GB used. No problems. It backed up all my data, installed the upgrade and then restored my ITouch to what I had before. The only thing I had to do was rearrange the home screen icons back to my configuration.

RE: Apple screws up re ne Iphone

No company can accurately predict sales projections, as I said this has happened before (and will happen again) to many vendors of many products. It appears that Apple has brought some more servers online. It looks like that between the new IPhones and current ITouch owners the servers overloaded. Currently my Itouch is now downloading the firmware update
